The southern steppes of Russia were
originally inhabited by nomadic peoples, and
the northern forests by Slavonic peoples, who
slowly spread southwards. 9th-10th centuries
Viking chieftains established their own rule
in Novgorod, Kiev, and other cities.
10th-12th centuries Kiev temporarily united
the Russian peoples into an empire.
Christianity was introduced from
Constantinople 988. 13th century The Mongols
(the Golden Horde) overran the southern
steppes, compelling the Russian princes to
pay tribute. 14th century Byelorussia and
Ukraine came under Polish rule. 1462-1505
Ivan III, prince of Moscow, threw off the
Mongol yoke and united the northwest. 1547-84
Ivan IV assumed the title of tsar and
conquered Kazan and Astrakhan. During his
reign the colonization of Siberia began. 1613
The first Romanov tsar was elected after a
period of chaos. 1667 Following a Cossack
revolt, E Ukraine was reunited with Russia.
1682-1725 Peter I (the Great) modernized the
administration and army, founded a navy,
introduced Western education, and wrested the
Baltic seaboard from Sweden. By 1700 the
colonization of Siberia had reached the
Pacific. 1762-96 Catherine II (the Great)
annexed the Crimea and part of Poland, and
recovered W Ukraine and White Russia.
1798-1814 Russia intervened in the
Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1798-1801,
1805-07), and after repelling Napoleon's
invasion took part in his overthrow
(1812-14). 1827-29 War with Turkey resulted
from Russian attempts to dominate the
Balkans. 1853-56 The Crimean War.
1858-60 The treaties of Aigun 1858 and Peking
1860 were imposed on China, annexing
territories north of the Amur and east of the
Ussuri rivers. 1861 Serfdom was abolished. A
rapid development of industry followed,
revolutionary ideas spread, and a
working-class movement developed. 1877-78
Balkan war with Turkey.
1898 The Social Democratic Party was founded.
1904-05 The occupation of Manchuria resulted
in war with Japan. 1905 A revolution,
although suppressed, compelled the tsar to
accept a parliament with limited powers. 1914
Russo-German rivalries in the Balkans, which
had brought Russia into an alliance with
France 1895 and Britain 1907, were one of the
causes of the outbreak of World War I. 1917
